Two US Soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed on Saturday in Syria when they were ambushed by a gunman. Three others are injured. Trump responded saying “There will be very serious retaliation.” While speaking to reporters, Trump said “Syria, by the way, was fighting along with us,” adding that the Syrian president is “devastated by what happened.” Pentagon Spokesman, Sean Parnell, said in a statement on X “Their mission was in support of on-going counter-ISIS / counter-terrorism operations in the region.” Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, said on X that the gunman was killed by partner forces.

The identity of the shooter has not been revealed, though Nour Eddin al-Baba, Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson, told Syrian state television an “assessment” of the shooter, taken by Syrian authorities on Wednesday, had indicated he may have held extremist ideas. He said the final result of the test was due to be issued on Sunday, but “fate decreed that the attack took place on Saturday, which is an administrative holiday,”. Al-Baba described the attack as taking place at the gate of a “fortified command facility” belonging to Syrian Internal Security Forces leadership. Initial reports say the attack was connected to ISIS, but the group has not yet publicly taken responsibility.
